Chip Townsend began his journey in martial arts at the age of 13 under the tutelage of Grand Master Lim. As a youngster, Chip was not a stranger to adversity. When he was 3 years old, a freak injury cost him his right eye. From that day forward, he faced life with a one-eyed perspective. In Chip’s case, that perspective was one of perseverance, and a belief that his handicap was in fact, not a handicap.

Chip has not only persevered to black belt and beyond, he has become a leader who teaches leaders and a mentor. To say he is an accomplished martial artist is an understatement.

He is a 6th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido, and holds 14 ISKA (International Sport Karate Association) World Titles in Breaking. He performs stunts that martial artists with two eyes struggle with, or cannot fathom. He holds 3 World Records. He has been featured on ESPN, the Discovery Channel, FitTV, and several Fox Sports Networks. More recently, Chip has been featured on NBC’s hit series, America’s Got Talent.

The picture of Chip breaking bricks, is the way most martial artists know, and recognize Chip. However, he is also a very savvy business owner.He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the prestigious COBA Business School at Abilene Christian University. Chip and his wife of 19 years, Glyn Ann (3x Women’s Creative Breaking World Champion), are the owners of the successful Team Chip Tae Kwon Do Centers (established in 1984) of Abilene, TX, with branches in Sweetwater, TX and Oklahoma. They have 3 children, Lexi age 11, Trinity age 3, and Slade age 21 months..

An IMPORTANT Lesson from “The Donald”!

A Lesson for Martial Arts School Owners from "The Donald"

I watch VERY little television, but one of my “guilty pleasures” is the Celebrity Apprentice!

I’ve watched every episode of EVERY season of the apprentice and Celebrity apprentice (PVR is an amazing invention….and a big time saver) looking for the lessons buried in the episodes (sometimes DEEPLY buried, sometimes not). And, of course, looking for insights into the “thinking” of one of the wealthiest people in the world.

So the first episode was a couple days ago, and there was a HUGE lesson for Martial Arts School Owners!

In the first challenge the men (Bill Goldberg, Curtis Stone, Bret Michaels, Darryl Strawberry, Michael Johnson, Rod Blagojevich and Sinbad ) faced off against the women (Carol Leifer, Sharon Osbourne, Summer Sanders, Selita Ebanks, Holly Robinson Peete, Maria Kanellis, and Cyndi Lauper)

The challenge was to run a diner for 3 hours, and “whoever makes the most money wins”!

Without recapping the entire episode, the men won by MORE THAN DOUBLE the revenue!

The game was won before it ever started!

There was 1 decision that the men’s team made that won the contest for them.

Before they decided on the menu, before they discussed “who” would work the front, and who would stand on the street and drum up business……

Before they decided ANYTHING, they looked at the restaurant and said:

“Well, we only have 30 seats, so if we fill them with people eating $10 burgers, we’ll only make $300……So let’s fill them with people who will spend $100 – $250 on the lunch.”

They were EXACTLY RIGHT!

The Women’s team filled their restaurant with people, and some of their “big” buyers weren’t able to get in the door to eat!

Now, you might be thinking…..”Well, my school isn’t full, so I need to take anyone I can…….” (or something similar)

Well…..I speak to school owners from ALL OVER THE WORLD, and I don’t know many (if any) schools that charge $79/month and have 400 students.

Now, I DO KNOW a good number of owners who have 400 students, and they are NEVER the “cheapest” school in town. They are almost always the most expensive.

Having a health bottom line is VITAL to growing your school!

You HAVE TO be investing in “new student acquisition” consistently so keep your student base growing!

You will NEVER be the “cheapest” option…..there will ALWAYS be someone willing to come into your area “Cheaper”…..ALWAYS!

As you may know, we recently lost a Business, Entrepreneurial, and Motivational GREAT – Jim Rohn.

If you don’t know who Jim Rohn is/was, he was an AMAZING speaker, author and mentor to MILLIONS of entrepreneurs, business owners…those who want to live lives of abundance and SIGNIFICANCE!

Some call him the “Trainer of Trainers”……

Anthony Robbins actually started his career by working for one of Jim’s companies, selling training programs.

I personally own 15 of Jim’s books, tapes and programs, and find new, penetrating, insightful lessons every time.

One of my favorite quotes from Jim Rohn is, “You will be the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

As an entrepreneur, you know what a lonely place it can be, which is why it’s do VITALLY IMPORTANT for you to deliberately, intentionally surround yourself with people who help you expand your expectation, and can dramatically shorten your learning curve!
